General:
Low shrub, 20-50 (80) cm tall, from long creeping rhizome; stems erect to spreading, with thin wiry branches, the young growth hairy.
Leaves:
Alternate, deciduous, short-stalked, oblong-elliptic to narrowly egg-shaped, 1.5-4 cm long, shallowly toothed most of their length, green and smooth above, paler and smooth or short-hairy below.
Flowers:
Inflorescence a branched, nearly flat-topped to half-rounded, terminal cluster of several to many small flowers; corollas white, the petals 5, nearly circular, about 2 mm long; calyces hairy on the outside, 5-lobed, the lobes triangular, eventually reflexed, about 1 mm long; ovaries superior; stamens numerous.
Fruits:
Follicles, usually 5, about 3 mm long, beaked, somewhat leathery, short-hairy; seeds several, spindle-shaped.
